Last summer, our family embarked on a week-long adventure to Yellowstone National Park. As a French photographer living in Houston, I was eager to explore this iconic American landscape. We chose to stay in West Yellowstone, a decision that proved both practical and delightful.
Why West Yellowstone?
West Yellowstone served as an ideal base for our explorations. Its accessibility from Houston, thanks to well-connected flights, made travel straightforward. The town offered a range of accommodations suitable for last-minute bookings and provided essential amenities like grocery stores and restaurants. While it’s a bustling hub, it retains a charming, small-town feel that made our stay comfortable and convenient.
Early Starts and Wildlife Wonders
Traveling with children often means early mornings, which, in Yellowstone, is a blessing. Departing before 8:30 AM allowed us to avoid the typical entrance congestion. These early hours also offered serene encounters with wildlife. One memorable morning, we watched a black bear and her cubs meander near the roadside—a sight that left us in awe.
Navigating the Park: Tips and Insights
Restroom Realities: Facilities at major centers like campgrounds and visitor centers are generally clean. However, some remote areas lack proper maintenance. Plan accordingly.
Avoiding Traffic: Early departures are key. If that’s not feasible, consider entering the park after 10:30 AM when initial rush subsides.
Exploring Beyond the Main Loop: While landmarks like Old Faithful and Grand Prismatic Spring are must-sees, venturing off the primary roads reveals quieter trails and hidden gems.
Wildlife Watching: The Roosevelt area near the North Entrance is renowned for wolf sightings. We were fortunate to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.
Safety First: Always maintain a safe distance from wildlife. We witnessed a vehicle-bison collision, a stark reminder of the importance of caution.
Accessibility: Major attractions are accessible to those with mobility challenges. However, off-the-beaten-path trails may present difficulties.
Dining Decisions: The restaurant at Old Faithful, while iconic, didn’t meet our expectations in terms of service and value. Dining in West Yellowstone offered better experiences.
Stargazing: The park’s night sky is a spectacle. On clear nights, the stars seem close enough to touch—a perfect end to adventurous days.
Embracing the Pace
Spending seven days in Yellowstone allowed us to immerse ourselves fully, appreciating the park’s diverse landscapes and rhythms. While shorter visits can cover highlights, a longer stay offers a deeper connection to this natural wonder.
